Online Workshop: Pen & Ink "Engraving Style" Shading Techniques (August 03, 2024)

ONLINE WORKSHOP: PEN & INK “ENGRAVING STYLE” SHADING TECHNIQUES From Basic to Advanced (All levels welcome)

I am very pleased to announce my upcoming Online Workshop that will begin on August 3, 2024, welcoming all levels. This workshop will include a total of 12 hours of learning, divided into 6 sessions, and will only be held on Saturdays and Sundays (3 weeks of learning). Please follow the detailed information about the workshop below.

WHAT IS THIS WORKSHOP ABOUT?

This workshop will focus entirely on Pen & Ink Shading TechniquesEngraving’ style. From basic to advanced concepts and techniques, you will be able to draw from simple to complex and diverse subject matters including Basic Forms, Still Life, Landscape/Scenery, and Portrait. Whether you are a beginner with no drawing experience or have certain skills in art, you are welcome to join!

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

Let’s go through the detailed Outline for the Workshop!

DAY 1: THE BASIC CONCEPTS (August 03, 2024)

  • Introduction

A brief introduction to Shading in visual art and specifically in the “Engraving” style. An overview of supportive materials and tools used in the workshop, as well as the learning schedule.

  • Preparation, Materials & Tools

Discuss some factors to prepare such as setting up the Workspace setup, Drawing Tools, Materials, Penholding method, Hand movement method, and other related contents.

  • Cross-contour: Analyzing the surface structure of the subject

Learning to analyze the Subject surface structure to represent 3D forms. Determine the direction of cross-contour lines to apply to the “Engraving” style drawing technique. Additionally, we will briefly discuss the Constructive Sketching method and basic Linear Perspective theory.

DAY 2: SHADING IN VISUAL ART (August 04, 2024)

  • Basic Shading Theory

We will get started learning Shading Theory in Visual Art. We will discuss and practice Value Scales, Key Shading Components, and carry out practical exercises from basic shading forms to still life and portraits (In this part, we will mostly use pencils to work on Shading exercises).

  • Advanced Shading: The Emotion of Light

We will explore some advanced shading techniques to represent more complex subjects, convey the depth of perspective, and express the emotion of the artwork (In this part, we will mostly use pencils to work on Shading exercises).

DAY 3: BASIC PEN & INK DRAWING TECHNIQUES (August 10, 2024)

  • Basic Pen & Ink Drawing Techniques

Start with the most basic concepts and techniques in Pen & Ink Drawing, such as line drawing, shapes, forms, and experimenting with different techniques.

  • Basic Pen & Ink Shading Techniques

Discuss some basic Pen & Ink Shading techniques in the “Engraving” style, including Hatching, Broken Lines, Line Weight, and Cross-contour Hatching & Cross-hatching.

  • Practical Exercises & Demonstrations

Apply the learned techniques to carry out practical exercises with Basic and Abstract Forms.

DAY 4: ADVANCED PEN & INK DRAWING TECHNIQUES (August 11, 2024)

  • Sometimes we don’t need to draw outlines

Introduce the method of depicting the shape and forms of the subject through Values and Light rather than using outline strokes.

  • Texture & Materials Expression

Explore the method of drawing special textures of subjects such as Fur (animals), Hair (humans), Materials (metal, glass, etc.) in the “Engraving” style.

  • Shading in Perspective & Environmental Expression

Explore how to depict Shading in Perspective, Scenery and Environmental Expression to emphasize the depth of the drawing.

DAY 5: STILL LIFE & LANDSCAPE (August 17, 2024)

  • Still Life Drawing & Shading Techniques

Learning and practicing Still Life drawing using the “Engraving” pen and ink technique with a detailed step-by-step demo tutorial.

  • Scenery & Landscape

Discuss and practice Scenery/Landscape drawing with a specific demonstration. Expressing not only the values but also the feelings and emotions in your work.

DAY 6: PORTRAIT DRAWING (August 18, 2024)

  • The Basic Concepts of Portrait Drawing

Briefly explore the most fundamental concepts in portrait drawing and shading including the Loomis Method, Constructive Sketching, and Basic Shading Techniques in Portrait Art.

  • Portrait “Engraving” style Pen & Ink Drawing

Follow a specific demo of drawing a portrait to practice shading techniques using the ‘Engraving” pen & ink drawing style.

  • Summary of the Workshop & Critique

Summary of the topics learned, discussions, Q&A sessions, and feedback on the practical exercises.

Week 1: August 03 & 04, 2024 Week 2: August 10 & 11, 2024 Week 3: August 17 & 18, 2024

  • Recording & Review: All the lessons will be recorded and can be reviewed within 30 days.
